Special issue on Sustainability in HSSE Online

SLL is pleased to support  the latest issue of HSSE Online (Vol 11, Issue 2)! (Access link: https://bit.ly/hssev11i2 ).

This special edition draws on overarching themes related to sustainability, sustainable development and sustainability-related pedagogies. Articles in this issue broadly put forward two important insights for practitioners’ considerations: first, geographical contexts and ecological constraints can affect the implementation of measures designed to mitigate environmental problems. It is argued that this becomes especially problematic when competing dimensions of sustainable development end up privileging economic sustainability over environmental sustainability. Second, augmenting sustainability competencies among learners can be more effectively facilitated through practitioner experimentations with innovative pedagogies. This includes the use of teaching methodologies that promote active interaction and application such as through game-based or digitally-enabled learning, and modes of learning that encourage critical thinking dispositions around issues related to sustainability and environmental education.

The treatment of sustainability-related topics and issues (as demonstrated by contributors in this issue) also suggests a noteworthy connection between education and environmental advocacy, particularly how education is seen as essential in informing environmental action. This pertains largely to action taken as a result of enhanced awareness not only of the ways the environment has (and continues to) impact human life and existence, but also how people – by taking action – can impact the environment to ensure a sustainable future for humanity.

We would like to encourage you to share this issue with colleagues, students and friends!
