Learning about the environment – an interdisciplinary experiential camp at St John’s Island Complex
25 June 2022
A/P Tan Aik Ling and Dr Tricia Seow, together with the staff of the St John’s Island National Marine Laboratory, officers from CPDD, and a team of 10 NIE student-volunteers, ran a 3-day camp on the St John’s Island Complex for 25 Secondary 3 students. The researchers hypothesised that spending time outdoors to experience the environmental and social aspects of the place would positively impact students’ pro-environmental attitudes and behaviour. Despite the heavy rain, spirits were high, with students and facilitators participating in a series of curated activities like role play activities, hands on lab and field sessions, scavenger hunts, and a task to outline their personal visions of the island complex. The team is greatly encouraged by the positive increase in students’ enjoyment of nature and feelings of nature-connectedness after the camp.
